All I ever wanted to do was be a Bond villain
Since I was a kid my only real career aspiration has been to become a Bond-style villain and hold the world to ransom. Is that so much to ask? Now I’ve had a few setbacks along the way - the ludicrous price of hollowed out inert volcanos, the ridiculous health and safety regulations you’ve got to stick to when employing hired goons, not to mention my complete lack of any kind of...

Letterpool London is looking for your photos —...
Letterpool London is a mass public art project; a celebration of the city’s urban art and architecture, looked at through its typography - the brands, graffiti, instructions and ideology around us every day. London has a rich, diverse and exciting design heritage, reflected all around us. It’s in the signs and signals we take for granted and the unseen art and graffiti of the back streets; the...

Will my vote change anything in the general...
It appears not. The interesting statistics provided by the folks at www.voterpower.org.uk seem to indicate that unless there is a particularly massive swing in voting, my vote in this general election will change… absolutely nothing. Great :( I found the information about discarded votes particularly interesting: 49.24% of those who voted in Huntingdon in 2005 did not vote for the ...

A phone from a sports/lifestyle brand should suck ass. This doesn’t. Puma have created what looks to be a really usable, engaging UI for their new phone. The big boys *cough* Motarola* *cough* Nokia *cough* could really learn from this approach.

This is exactly why I try to work from home 2 days a week - because the relative productivity of that time is massively higher than time spent in the office.

HSBC + Monilink = FAIL
I’ve now been trying to download the Monilink app for my N95 for over a week without a single bit of success. Literally, not a bit. Or a byte, let alone a megabyte! You go to the HSBC site and it tells you: To add the mobile banking app to your mobile, simply follow these 4 steps: Text HSBC to 82428, we’ll send you a text message back within 60 seconds. Select the link in the...

A question of (air)time
AKA Some thoughts raised by Question Time last night. What should we make of last nights Question Time appearance by Nick Griffin, head of the controversial BNP? His appearance on that stage marked a watershed in modern british politics, with mainstream politicians sharing a platform with a man that many consider to be very dangerous indeed, representing as he does an organisation with historic...

A multi-touch mouse? Really? Why?...
Say it again - Multi. Touch. Mouse. Ever found yourself wishing that someone would just make that last little leap and make your desktop experience all the better for it? No? Me neither. Come on, Apple - you’ve got to be putting something funny in the water if your engineers are coming up with multi-touch mice. Basically what you’ve done is removed the ball from the frankly...

10/GUI is a nice enough idea, but I like some breathing space around my application windows so the appalingly named “Con10uum” interface would get on my nerves very quickly. In fact, all I want is a USB version of a Macbook multi-touch trackpad - how hard can that be?!?

WIRED Intelligence Briefing - piracy and media...
Piracy (or “How to make money from content in a digital age”) In a digital world distribution is easy, and as internet access and bandwidth expand the marginal costs of consuming media diminish. With consumption of digital media on the rise, how can content providers secure their revenue streams? Many content providers will decry the woes of file sharing and piracy, citing the impact...

WIRED Intelligence Briefing - policing the...
Enforcement, censorship, and freedom of speech We live in a country with a strong tradition of a free, independent press and liberty of individual thought and speech, yet we worry that the internet is an unenforceable digital frontier akin to the wild west. It isn’t, but we should be glad of our freedoms in that regard. As with any new technology, enforcement will initially be tricky but...

WIRED Intelligence Briefing - are you local?
Localisation versus location awareness There was a good deal of talk about the emerging trend for localised information and small interest groups paired with the promise of ubiquitous, location-aware devices such as the iPhone and its smartphone brethren, but I wonder whether the discussion is not more about location awareness/sensititvity than it is about locality. GPS-enabled smartphones make...

WIRED Intelligence Briefing - a little bit of...
Political engagement and grass-roots campaigning Apparently we are increasingly disenfranchised when it comes to party politics in the UK, and there is a strong feeling that the political classes are more detached from the views and concerns of the man on the street than at any time in living memory. Old news, you might think. In the run up to the expected demolition of labour government...

WIRED Intelligence Briefing - thoughts and general...
I was fortunate enough to attend the inaugural WIRED Intelligence Briefing this morning in the salubrious surroundings of the Faraday Theatre at the Royal Institution of Great Britain and I enjoyed it immensely. It was refreshing to be treated to a multi-disciplinary perspective on the opportunities and challenges provided by advances in technology alongside philosophy, psychology, politics, and...

Oy veh!
I saw a fantasic numberplate on my way in to work yesterday which implicitly suggested a certain amount about both the owners religiosity and sense of humour. T70RAH It was on a black BMW 535d - nice! Among a world of crappy personalised numberplates it struck me as being an interesting shorthand for a number of personal statements, yet is accessible only to those with some simple yet...
